ABOUT THE TEACHER  http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:xCnMobxvCIC9ZM:http://www.clipartpal.com/_thumbs/pd/education/apple_and_slateboard.png&t=1

I worked for the U.S. Customs service as a student for 4 years.  Upon graduation from Canisius

College I taught at the Diocesan Educational Campus in Buffalo as a 4th grade teacher.  Within

six months I left my teaching position and returned to the U.S. Customs Service to pursue a career in

law enforcement.   I spent 10 years on the border between Buffalo, Niagara Falls,

and the Thousand Islands as an Inspector and Supervisory Inspector.   I then spent 3 years as an

Entry Officer.   I left the government in 2000 to raise my family.   In 2005 I returned to teaching

as the Kindergarten teacher at St. Stephen’s School.  I have held that position since then and can

truly say that I am in a job I love!

My husband of 25 years and I have lived on Grand Island for the past 17 years and have made

St. Stephen’s our parish and school.   We have a daughter, currently a sophomore attending

Canisius College, a son, a freshman attending Grand Island High School, both alumni of

St. Stephen’s School.   We also have a son currently in 4th grade at St. Stephen’s.

I was honored in April of 2011 to receive the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the

Year in Education for 2010.

SIGHT WORDS we will learn this year:

We are writing our sight words and keeping a list in the reading homework folder to review each night as part of the reading homework.

WAYS TO PRACTICE SIGHT WORDS AT HOME:

Magazine words:  Use an old magazine or newspaper and find your words.

Making words: make words out of pretzels, Twizzlers, gummy worms, sour snakes, and other long skinny candies.

Make flash cards using our sight words and store them in a sealed bag.  Encourage your child to review the words often.

What’s Missing?  - child places 3-4 words on the table, identifies words, and then closes eyes while parent removes one word.  Child identifies missing word.  Then parent closes eyes, and lets child remove a word.

Other practice at home:

-Rhyming with words – play rhyming games such as “I’m thinking of a word that rhymes with “cat” and begins with /b/. (bat)

-Tying

-Correctly making the sign of the cross

-Reciting the Our Father

-Reciting the Hail Mary

-learning complete address

-learning phone number

-learning birth date

-printing #’s 0-10

-find the first letter of your child’s name at home or in the car

-point our words you see every day, on signs and at the store
