announcements

We will be making our Valentine’s Day card holders on Tuesday. Please make sure that your child has sent in a rectangular tissue box for this project. Also, the 100th day of school project is due by the 14th.

***IMPORTANT NOTE- We do have a child with a peanut allergy in our class. Please keep this in mind when sending in snack! Also, we have had some concern about the nutritional value of the snack. Please try to keep the snack as healthy as possible. I understand that most kids do not love eating vegetables, but fruit, pretzels and popcorn are a healthier alternative than cookies. Here are some other great options:

Fresh fruit

Raw vegetables with low fat dip

Dried fruit

Nut free trail mix

Cereal

Snack bars

Finger sandwiches

100% real fruit juice

Fruit in a can or cup

Low fat or non-fat milk, cheese and yogurt

Crackers

Animal crackers

Bagel chips

Apple sauce

Rice cakes

Graham crackers

Baked tortilla chips

Pretzels

Popcorn

Fat free pudding

Sugar free jello

Thanks for your cooperation!

The Pizza Hut Book It program will be starting October 1st. All first graders will participate in this program by reading books at home and then by filling in a chart that comes home. Each month there will be a designated number of books that must be read. Please help your child fill this chart out and send it back by the first day of the following month. This assignment will count towards the 100% homework club!

homework

Homework will typically be given out Monday-Thursday. This should not take your child more than 15-20 minutes to complete. When the children begin having spelling homework from Mrs. May, please check their planner for their spelling words. They will have an assignment each night that needs to be completed in their spelling notebook. It is your child’s responsibility to make sure that they bring home the spelling notebook along with their folder and planner every night. I remind them when they are packing up at the end of the day, but they need to make sure that they are following directions.

If your child is struggling in math, try using the Harcourt website to practice fun math games and skills.  Here are the directions:

  1. Go to the Harcourt Schools website at www.harcourtschool.com and double click on the red box for the learning site.
  2. Once you are on the next page, you will need to click on the math box.
  3. Next, you will need to highlight “Harcourt Math” and then scroll over to the right and click on the top box with the pictures of the math books.
  4. You will need to log on. The password is one of the author’s last names, and you can type in “Andrews.”
  5. Fill in the rest of the information.
  6. Click on the appropriate grade. This will log you on as a student, and there are different activities that you can click on. You can also click on the Glossary, E-Lab for grades 3-5, “That’s a Fact!”, and Math Jingles. “That’s a Fact” provides addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division fact practice. “Math Jingles” are songs about math concepts.
  7. If you look at the top of the page, and scroll over to where it says “Parent and Teacher View,” you will find a webliography section that is not in the student part. There is a list of websites that your child can also use to practice different math skills.

***It is essential that all students know their math facts from memory by the end of 2nd grade. Finger counting is acceptable in first grade, but it is not in third grade. Using flash cards for 5 minutes a day will help your child memorize their facts. We also do a period of math drill daily to further help the children memorize their facts.

This is my 7th year teaching at St. Stephen. I began as a part time reading and math teacher, and then took over in 1st grade when Mrs. Silsby left on maternity leave. I am NYS certified in Childhood Education, as well as Literacy and Students with Disabilities. I completed my undergraduate work at SUNY Cortland and then completed my Masters at Canisius College. I am looking forward to a great year with my new students!
